log 2_ IMPRESSION

log continue

the story begins with this single story house as i mentioned in the previous log. the prominent balsa sheet roof in model here depicts the double L configuration that we should work around with. therefore the series of new double or more storeys massing typologies all reflect this characteristic.

since then i have continue to work on a few more addition to the series.

then i focus on rendering my impression on each of those individual typology, or rather the very vision i had in mind from which they were born. let's take a look at each of them now.

type 01

it came as a thought of mines:
to not isolate vehicles from daily life/ vehicle as an integrated part of garden

  • double volume garage filled with light and trees
  • eye-height wall served as a practical barrier between daily life and cars yet not separate them
  • on the same level, one will also find outdoor living furniture
  • arch-like passage ways meant for cars or sometimes don't; articulate the scale of vehicle space and people's outdoor leisure space by accommodate both with same elements

type 02

i tried to breakaway from the given configuration preset by looking at how Malay or Melanau house develop over time with a basic module like this. i was looking into the possibilities of employing same concept in order to not tie the design down to one fixed configuration but work around it with another kind of typology but accommodate the layout in a rigid way

  • i realized how integrated it is for transport vessel like cars or boats with houses all along the way
  • raised-platform base house provide a natural inclination towards designing with varying volumes due to the individuality of platform

i then became intrigue with how these seemingly ordinary vernacular houses became an unique habitat each in its own right. it is fascinating how the "uniqueness" in the end do not come from our creation, but by combining people's creation with nature. if a house is also a habitat, then why can't it be a plain canvas for different life form?

type 03

now this is the product of subtraction. by having everything in one monolithic "block", i was seeking the double L's configuration through subtracting the courtyard and other open air circulation space from this block. i must say that this isn't my favorite way of solving problems but i do find the monolithic form offer a kind of  special impression that i don't find in other options, a kind of unifying power.

  • minimal geometry that unify every elements in the house
  • particularly inward looking which makes the central courtyard very prominent
  • juxtaposition: its rather complex internal volume against the monolithic exterior form
  • rich variation of internal volume by liberating it through removing the externality of each of those volume
  • with it comes a certain degree of freedom in deciding the platforms under the same reason

type 04

this is a rather straight forward approach where
